The Speck MultiCyclone 12 Plus is a two-stage pool pre-filter. Twelve hydrocyclones spin heavier dirt and sediment into a clear chamber, and a cartridge element with 3.7 m² (40 ft²) of filter area catches finer material above them. It has 50 mm connection ports, a maximum working pressure of 350 kPa (50 psi), a glass filled thermoplastic body and a 1 inch sediment purge valve.

Heavy first, fine second
Sediment is spun out by the cyclones before it ever reaches the element, which is what keeps a cartridge usable for a sensible length of time. A cartridge on its own in front of a pool pump loads up with grit and needs attention constantly.

Purge the grit, rinse the element
The sediment chamber empties through the 1 inch purge valve exactly as on the standard MultiCyclone. The cartridge is a separate job and a much less frequent one, because most of what would have fouled it never got there.

What is the difference between the MultiCyclone 12 and the 12 Plus?
The 12 is cyclonic separation only. The 12 Plus adds a cartridge element with 3.7 m² of filter area in the same housing, so it catches fine material the cyclones are not designed to remove.
Is the 12 Plus or the 16 Plus the better buy?
They carry the same 3.7 m² cartridge. The 16 Plus has four more hydrocyclones and 63 mm ports rather than 50 mm. Check which port size suits your pipework, and check the current price of both — they are close.
