What it is
A chlorinator, running on different minerals
Every salt pool works by electrolysis: water carrying dissolved chloride passes through a cell, and the cell converts it into sanitiser. A magnesium pool is the same machine doing the same job, with magnesium chloride and potassium chloride in the water alongside the sodium instead of sodium alone.
That is the entire difference, and it is enough to change how the water feels. The minerals used are typically Dead Sea derived, which is where the magnesium comes from. How that Dead Sea connection began.

Why that name
Magnesium pool, mineral pool, same thing
The phrase came out of Australia, where the category is mature and “magnesium pool” is how it is sold. In South Africa the same product is marketed as Mineral Swim by Maytronics. If you have been reading Australian pages and wondering what the local equivalent is called, that is your answer — and the equipment is the same equipment.

Pump, filter, weir, cleaner, heating, cover. A conversion changes what sanitises the water, not what moves or filters it. The pool is not drained and nothing structural is touched.

The honest part
What a magnesium pool does not do
Plenty of pages on this subject make claims we are not going to repeat. Here is where the line sits.
It is not chlorine-free
The cell makes chlorine. It holds it lower — 0,5–1,0 ppm against a conventional 2,0–3,0 — and with ozone running, Maytronics rate the demand as falling by up to 80%. Lower is not none.
It is not a medical product
We will tell you the water feels softer, because it does and you can feel it yourself in ten minutes. We will not tell you it treats, soothes or improves any condition. Nobody selling pool equipment is in a position to make that claim.
It is not maintenance-free
You still test, balance, brush and backwash. What stops is the twice-weekly job of dosing chlorine by hand. That is a real gain and it is enough of one without embroidering it.

Magnesium pools, asked properly
What is a magnesium pool?
A pool sanitised by an electrolytic cell running on magnesium-rich minerals rather than plain sodium chloride. The cell still makes chlorine; it makes it from magnesium and potassium chloride alongside sodium, which is what gives the water its softer feel.
Is a magnesium pool the same as a mineral pool?
In practice, yes. “Magnesium pool” and “mineral pool” describe the same thing and are used interchangeably. Maytronics market the category as Mineral Swim in South Africa; the Australian market tends to say magnesium pool.
Can I get a magnesium pool in South Africa?
Yes. Maytronics EcoSwim and Mineral Swim units are sold and supported in South Africa and the Dead Sea minerals are imported. You do not need to build a new pool for one; existing pools convert.
Is magnesium chloride the same as Epsom salt?
No, and it matters. Epsom salt is magnesium sulphate. Pool minerals are magnesium chloride alongside potassium and sodium chloride — chloride is what the cell needs to make sanitiser. Do not put Epsom salt in a pool expecting it to work.
Does a magnesium pool need chlorine?
It makes its own, from the minerals in the water. It is not a chlorine-free pool. Maytronics’ own figures put a Mineral Swim pool at 0,5–1,0 ppm free chlorine against 2,0–3,0 ppm in a conventional one.
What does the water actually feel like?
Softer. Magnesium-rich water has a different feel on the skin to plain sodium chloride, and most people notice it inside ten minutes. That is what you are buying — we are not going to tell you it does anything for your health.
What equipment do I need?
A chlorinator rated to run on minerals, and the minerals. A Maytronics EcoSwim from R14 899,99 covers pools to 30 000 L; the Mineral Swim V2 Pro range adds the ozone purifier in the same box. Your existing pump, filter and cleaner carry on unchanged.
How much does it cost to run?
Mineral Swim Dead Sea Minerals 10 kg is R769,99, and Maytronics put normal use at four to five bags a year on a typical domestic pool. That is more than pool salt. The minerals are what the category is, so it is the honest cost of it.
